My Puzzle Pirates flag did a cool project in August:
People interested signed up to make a mix CD of obscure good music that we wanted to spread the word about. We then all pooled our addresses and every person mailed a copy of the mix CD to every other person on the list. Ten of us signed up, so I'm getting nine CDs of (hopefully) new good music to check out in the post.
That said, making a mix CD is HARD. There's a lot of music that I like, and little of it blends logically track-to-track on a single disc. For example, I like hip-hop/rap, taiko, trance, acapella, rock, J-rock, ooh, and this awesome Welsh mythology album... etc.
I hope that the album makes a moderate amount of sense to its recipients. I managed to squish Cypress Hill on the same CD as Aphex Twin and a piano song by Alex Wong, so it's questionable.

I don't know, I managed to get everything from shamisen music to dark cabaret with music and lyrics from a comic book on there and I thought it all flowed well from one song to the next. (Whether or not anybody else has enjoyed it is entirely their problem.) I think if you just worry about the song to song transitions rather than the disc as a whole you should be able to put together a cohesive mix.

Damn. I wish my flag did /cool/ stuff instead of all the lame 'blockade' things they just can't get over :(
Anyway, on the actual topic of mix CD's I know what you mean. I've been taking classes in radio production for three years, and every time I'm forced to pick out any sort of sound for someone else all of a sudden I'm so much more conscious of my own taste versus everyone else's - and how everything fits together.
