Baking pies

Much of the U.S. seems to be seeing a heat wave this week.

San Francisco has been unusually warm, which has been lovely since I haven't shivered on the walk home from the bus stop in a week, but there's been an unfortunate side effect:

Just as Southern California's roads and buildings were not built for rain and consequently flood every time there's a light shower, San Francisco's drainage system was apparently not built for hot weather. Now that it's been very warm, the sewage has been baking and the smell is coming out of every sewer grate in the city.

The entire city of San Francisco literally smells like poo.

I'd been surreptitiously checking my shoes at every stoplight and seriously considering the possibility that a homeless person had smeared poop somewhere on my jacket before somebody told me what was going on.

Jin has proposed that the smell in Chinatown must be incredible, considering that the last time we went there, there were large chunks of raw fish strewn in the street around the bus stop.

I still love you San Francisco, even if you smell.
